With their newest release, This band has come a step closer to capturing their thunderous live sound. The drums kick a bit heavier, the bass is grittier, and the keyboard sounds really grind. In an opening track by the name of “Flotsam & Jetsam”, they pull out such tricks as meter changes, outrageously catchy hooks, and a dance-anthem chorus. This tune shows thier maturity in compositional structure that goes far beyond the normal confines of electro-pop. They didn’t attempt anything so risky in their debut. They keep the album sludgy throughout, following the climactic “Flotsam & Jetsam” with another dance anthem, this song pick. This track is more of what the doom funk quartet does best; hooks, dance beats, eerie organ riffs, and guitar anthems. They manage to keep this fire alive with the third track of extended play, entitled “Onward & Awkward”. Afterwards, the excitement begins to dip, with the hooks of fourth track “Young Rapture” not proving their worth enough when faced with the dynamic of the first three tracks. The final track, “Glacial Drumlins” proves to be memorable enough of a song to cap the album off in an excitement that leaves the listener more than satisfied. While the album does take a small turn for worse after the first three tracks, three out of five stellar tunes proves to be enough to make this E.P. a standout amongst most of the releases of its peers. This song pick would be perfect for the mashup previews they show at the Alamo Drafthouse. — Phantom Tails - Dressed Wounds
